Why a mat changes the sound
A desk is a large flat panel, and a speaker standing on it makes it move. The mat puts something dense and still between the two, so the desk stops joining in.
Under the speakers
Stand each cabinet on the mat, on its pads, so the enclosure is not coupled straight to the desk surface.
Under everything else
It is also a desk mat. Keyboard, notebook and mug all live on it without sliding.
Questions about the Desk Mat
Does a mat really change what I hear?
On most desks, yes, and mostly in the low mids. It costs the least in the range and is often the most noticeable change.
Do I still need the isolation pads?
Use both. The pads lift the cabinet, the mat stops the desk surface ringing underneath.
How do I clean it?
Brush it, or spot clean with a damp cloth and let it dry flat.
